Personality:
Beat is loyal to a fault. He’s very easy to get along with and when he considers you a friend, you can be sure that he will stick by your side until the end. A good example of this is seen in his friendship with Neku. Over the course of the first Reaper’s Game, he is able to befriend Neku, and, despite the circumstances, they find themselves in, was able to develop a deep bond with him, eventually considering him as a friend and not just a partner in the game. The bond shared between the two was enough for Coco to pull them back together as partners for the fake Reaper's Game, before offing Neku at the end. Beat was last seen reaching out for Neku as he fell to the ground. In the second game, it's shown just how dedicated Beat is, spending the last three years of his life searching for Neku after his friend’s untimely death.
Due to his loyalty to those he cares about, Beat has also been shown to be quite selfless, willing to put others before himself as mentioned earlier. When both he and Rhyme find themselves in the first Reaper’s Game, he learns that Rhyme, who had once been full of dreams and aspirations, found herself aimless as part of her entry fee to the death game. He quickly tells her that his dream was to be the world’s best skateboarder, hoping to soften the blow even if it was a lie, and even if he had to deal with his own entry fee standing right before him: Rhyme’s memories of him.
That’s not to say that Beat is completely selfless either. He had bouts of selfishness too, such as when he joined the Reapers during the second week of the Game in hopes of bringing Rhyme back after she had been erased. While his motives could still be seen as selfless, the act certainly leaned toward selfishness at the time.
Other times his selflessness shines through is also seen when he feels things should be fair between the parties involved, willing to step in when the cards are unfairly stacked against one side. This is seen when he puts himself in front of Rindo despite not knowing him at the time when Susukichi tried to end him during the first week of the new Reaper's Game. He does this again when Tsugumi tries to engage in battle with the Wicked Twisters on the second day of week 2, later joining the team because of this, and once more when Minamimoto’s Taboo Noise form is unleashed on the Twisters, staying behind to buy the Twisters time to escape even if it meant he might be erased in the process. This goes to show just how far Beat is willing to go for others as well as his bravery in the face of tough situations.
Probably because he is Rhyme’s older brother, his protective instinct carries over even to his friends. He watches out for all of them and is more than willing to reassure them or cheer them on needless of whether he says it aloud or not. Beat always has their back and is willing to go toe-to-toe against anyone for them. He even has the gall to be cocky about it just to keep the gang’s spirits up even when things are looking bleak. This probably stems from the times that he wasn’t able to protect those he cared for, like Rhyme prior to the Reaper’s Game, then again during the first week of the game as well as when Neku is killed by Coco during A New Day. If there is some way he could protect others from getting hurt, even at his own expense, you can damn well count on Beat throwing himself in-between them and whatever danger they’re facing. It’s amusing to note how this carries over with his sister as well when he gets protective of her when people try to get close or even ask about her.
Beat is an easy read though. He’s always worn his heart on his sleeve even though he’s trying to keep his emotions in check. But it goes to show just how genuine of a person he is. He’s honest about what he’s feeling and his intentions and does very little to filter these out too. In fact, he’s so honest that he may come off as blunt about the things he says. When he and the gang meet up with Uzuki, Beat comes clean that he’s forgotten who she is and that he doesn’t remember her name because he’s never said it aloud. He doesn’t say this to be mean in any way. It just so happens to be the truth.
But this is not to say that he only does this to others. He’s honest about who he is too, more than willing to admit that he isn’t smart, that he tends to be impulsive, and that sometimes he needs help with those sorts of things. He’s oddly self-aware like that, too.
When Beat says that he isn’t smart though, he isn’t kidding. At all. The boy is dumb as rocks. Things really need to be dumbed down for him, like “Explain Like I’m 5” level dumbed down so he can understand what you’re trying to say. Unless someone is being direct with him, it’s likely what they’re saying will go over his head. This even applies to insults directed toward him. He’s constantly spitting out malaphors and has a tendency to get words wrong, and it isn’t for lack of trying though.
This could sometimes lead to Beat being a bit impulsive when it comes to his decision-making because he doesn’t fully understand what he’s being told or because he’s missing the point completely. It doesn’t help that he’s not one to sit around doing nothing too. But regardless of this reasoning, Beat has a tendency to act first and think later, brute-forcing his way through his problems unless he’s told to do otherwise. Should someone tell him of another way to go about the plan, he’s more than willing to listen and adjust where he’s needed.
Despite all his faults and how he presents himself, we shouldn’t forget that Beat is kind-hearted as presented over and over in the game. He’s a straight-up good dude who always looks out for others even when he rushes head first into things.
Abilities & Inventory:
While in the UG, Beat has the latent ability to use Soundsurf, which allows him and those he syncs up with to move at high speeds. I think it would be interesting if he could only use this on himself at first, until he is able to understand and utilize dreamotion better, leading him to be able to have it work on a few others as well. Should this be too much, I can default to it only affecting him.
With the use of the Player Pin that's given to every Player in the Reaper's Game, Beat is able to hear the thoughts of other people around him by scanning and blocking other players from hearing his own thoughts. It is untested whether this works outside of the Game and UG. It's unlikely that Beat will really use it if it even did work unless the situation really calls for it.
Beat also has the ability to use psyches and harness the power of these from other pins. This could be anything from controlling various elements (fire, water, lightning, etc), healing abilities, or straight-up telekinesis depending on the pin being wielded.
Beat is also hinted to be a decent skateboarder in the first game.
As for his inventory, it will simply consist of the clothes on his back, his headphones, his smartphone, the player pin, and the Burnin' Boar pin. His smartphone will not work with regard to sending out messages and making calls, but can still act as a music player.
Suitability & Plans:
I’d also like to explore Beat taking a bit of time for himself as well as a lot of the last three years of his life was dedicated to making things right when it came to his sister Rhyme, then, later on, trying to find Neku after he is killed yet again by Coco at the end of the fake Reaper’s Game. After putting in so much time for others, I think it would be great for Beat to find himself and what he truly enjoys doing and find aspirations as he doesn’t really have a dream for himself.
While canonmates would be nice, I'm sure I'll be able to find ways to sustain Beat in-game regardless of if he has any or not.
